Ebook About “A first-rate storyteller who creates believable, sympathetic characters who seem as familiar as your neighbors,” (The Boston Globe), Barbara Delinsky presents a captivating new novel about a woman whose unexpected reunion with her estranged family forces her to confront a devastating past in A Week at the Shore. One phone call is all it takes to lure Mallory Aldiss back to her family’s Rhode Island beach home. It's been twenty years since she's been gone—running from the scandal that destroyed her parents' marriage, drove her and her two sisters apart, and crushed her relationship with the love of her life, Jack Sabathian. Twenty years during which she lived in New York, building her career as a photographer and raising her now teenage daughter Joy. But that phone call makes it clear that something has brought the past forward again—something involving Mallory’s father. Compelled by concern for her family and by Joy’s wish to visit her mother’s childhood home, Mallory returns to Bay Bluff, where conflicting loyalties will be faced and painful truths revealed. In just seven watershed days at the Rhode Island shore, she will test the bonds of friendship and family—and discover the role that love plays in defining their lives.Book A Week at the Shore: A Novel Review :
I’ve loved every one of Barbara Delinsky’s books. I really want to believe this might have been a manuscript sitting on a shelf. If an unpublished author submitted this garbage, an editor would rip it to shreds!!She handled Dementia so beautifully in Shades of Grace. The way it’s handled here is a travesty. To have a character say there is no way to diagnose Alzheimer’s until a person is dead?? I hope a reader out there doesn’t have a loved one exhibiting symptoms! CTs and MRIs are included with a standard evaluation to diagnose it.There is a real obsession with eyes throughout: ashy eyes meet mine; eyes the color of slate search my face; my adamant eyes answer. Many more, but you get the picture.A vet goes out in public to an eating establishment with blood on his scrubs, really?? I don’t care if he’s sitting outside. Even if it is animal blood—no medical professional of any kind would do that. And what’s with the names? Confusing when a character is named Amelia and a short time later we’re told her name is Lily, short for Amelia. Diminutive for Amelia: Amy, Milly, Emma, Mel, NOT Lily. Why even put that in? And Barbara must really be in love with the hero’s surname — Sabathian because I lost count of the number of times she reminded me that Jack’s last name is Sabathian. That’s Jack Sabathian.Mallory sums up the romantic element of the story “I’ve been with men kinder than you.” She said that to her old love. Writing 101, make sure the reader likes the hero. And I didn’t warm to him...ever, unfortunately.I love dogs, but I’m uncomfortable with dogs off leash, especially large dogs. ESPECIALLY pit bulls. But I begrudgingly accepted that Jack kindly took in an abused animal. That is, until Mallory and Jack are on the beach and her daughter starts running excitedly toward them. That’s when the pit bull growls menacingly and takes off toward her. But Jack is able to get to the dog and stop him before he attacks...yeah right. And then he assures Mallory that it’s ok because he’s a dog in training to learn to trust. Why does the dog have trust issues? According to Jack it’s because the dog was trained to attack if he wanted to live. No, he doesn’t need to be on a leash!THIS LAST IS A SPOILER: but I still think you should read it because I got to page 239 and I can’t take anymore.Mallory is the middle sister who comes home after many years because she’s concerned for her father’s health. But wait, he may not really be her father, it could be the gardener. She knew something was off about her life, her maybe father never favored her, in the meantime her maybe father was in love with his next door neighbor Elizabeth, who disappeared under mysterious circumstances. But wait, there’s more—Mallory’s mother may have been in love with Elizabeth too! I have read many Barbara Delinsky books and looked forward to this one............it was SO SLOW and to be completely honest so BORING. I could not wait to finish it, not because it was so good, but when I start a book I have to finish and it was chore to finish this one. Not one of best, for sure. I was being gracious with 2 stars.
